The company was established in 1948 by a certain gentleman named David P Bushnell when he returned to California from Japan with a crate of binoculars and conducted business via mail order. For the first time, the corporation started making binoculars for middle-class Americans. They did the cost-cutting by importing from manufacturers in Asia from countries like Hong Kong, Japan, and Taiwan. Ultimately, it expanded its business and started producing rifle scopes. In 1971, the company was sold to Bausch and Lomb.

Why are riflescopes necessary?

The notion of riflescopes was brought into vogue during the American civil war. After its induction in the spectrum of weaponry, during the middle part of the nineteenth century. However, it took almost a century for Riflescopes to get recognition in the traditional weapon culture and civilian game hunting. By the late 1970s scopes were beginning to dominate in the weapon circle by replacing the iron sights on rifles meant for hunting.

What happened in the 90s was shocking, as the gun manufacturers stopped producing iron sights in most of the guns. Only the oldest variants of the game hunting category of rifles, like the brush rifles and the big-bore hunting rifles, came with the iron sights. In todays world, one might not come across an iron sight even in the oldest of variants. But today very few guns are there, which is not fitted intrinsically with bases for scope attachment.

Today riflescopes are not just in demand, but they have upgraded themselves with the up-gradation of science. With the modernization of optics technology, the scopes have improved at a rapid pace. Red-dots and reflex sights produced today are a whole lot better than devices that were made a few years ago.

How are riflescopes constructed?

The body of the riflescopes gets constructed with one long body pipe that is coated with anodized-aluminum, preferably aircraft grade. The reason behind the choice of this metal is because aluminum is lighter than steel, so it enables smooth operability of the scope. There are two instruments, located at the bow and the stern of the tube which ring. There are also an objective lens and an ocular lens.

The primary body houses additional lenses and colorful structures and a reticle that can be tweaked so that the impact that is air dependent can be adjusted an elevation mechanism to adjust upward and downward movement. The light from outside makes its way into the tube by first hitting the objective lens, travels through the primary tube and then the lenses and the prisms and finally catches your eye with an image formed on the surface of the reticle that is further formed on the aiming coincidence to give you a vague idea about where the shot that you have fired is going to impact.

Parts of the scope

Placing of the reticle

The reticle can be located in two places on the erector tube. It can be seen either in the front focal plane or the focal plane at the back. For a long time, rear reticles were standard, but today with the urge for long-range shooting, manufacturers are making scopes with reticles placed on the frontal focal plane.

The advantage of a focal plane is that your view will change with the magnification. The 10x zoom will make your images appear more significant. However, the 3X zoom will diminish the size of the object. These features will enable you to spot a target situated at a long distance, and elevation and wind adjustment will remain constant throughout this operation.

The diameter of the primary tube

Since the inception, scope tubes have always been around 1 inch, but European gun makers have favored a larger 30mm tube. The reason for the popularity of the 30mm scope is that it will give you greater freedom to adjust for long-distance shots and will enable the entry of an optimum quantity of light.

Entry of light

Let this be noted, that there is no such thing called 100% light transmission unless there some technologically smart object that can clear the interiors of the tube. The light then enters the tube keeps on losing itself to reflections against various lenses, and some part of it is absorbed in the body as well. Under lowly lit conditions, probably, you wont be able to see anything if your scope reflects too much light. Apart from the natural entry of view, many manufacturers use a kind of lens that systematically manipulates light. It allows not only maximization of light but also makes sure that the images formed are high-resolution and sharp.

Lens Coating

The lenses get coated with different materials to make sure that the entry of light is maximized because of the reduction in reflection. New technology has made scopes to become more available in the market, thereby dropping its prices. So now these technologically superior scopes will be cheaper than the weaker scopes that were made earlier. It is mostly because of anti-reflective coatings that transmit more light.

The coatings, apart from their usual functions, also make sure that there are no abrasions. Because of dirt and debris in the lenses, and also helps prevent hydrophobic lenses, from producing a tampered image in wet weather. Today, in modern scopes you will find nonreactive gases like nitrogen present to fight the moisture and fog (in case of winter)

Dot sights

The rising trend in the use of sporting gun has led to the rise of the use of red-dot reflex sights. These scopes use the projection of a red led on a glass exterior to use that as an aiming instrument. Ultra-modern scopes use holographic sights.

About the device

The Bushnell Trophy is leading the race for Trophy XLT rifle based scopes till today. It has multiple coating of optics and is available in two variants of reticles, the Multi-X, and the DOA-600. The scope is not only shockproof but also fog-proof and waterproof. The scope also comes with an easy-open flip cover. The mounting associated with this device is secure, simplifies your sighting and acts as a versatile scope. The Bushnell Trophy is a scope that goes through rigorous modernization and still manages not to be expensive for a passionate shooter. The Bone collector scope is the most adored version of this device.

What does the DOA 600 mean?

The Bone collector edition also comes equipped with the Multi-X reticle that has proven to be vastly popular among game hunters. However, this edition also has the DOA-600 variant. The name stands for Dead On Accurate at 600 yards. This reticle has a ballistic effect and has an impact up to 600 yards. The device has a nearly perfect consumer report. And with its cost placed at around 120$, is sure to attract a lot of attention.

Eye relief for the XLT

This variant has a perfectly decent eye relief of five centimeters. That is an adequate distance if you want to place your cheek comfortably at the side of the device. To get a proper visualization of the image, that gets formed without the creation of any distortions, and you can still keep your eyes uninjured. One might argue that the five inches are lower than the six inches that are available with a Bushnell Dusk and Dawn and MZ 200 reticle. However, it is still more massive than the standard three-inch eye relief that comes with most low-range scopes.

What is the amount of light transmission that is allowed in the device?

The lens in this device comes coated more than once. It makes it an attraction in this price spectrum. With such a proper coating it allows an impressive 91% rate of light transmission. Bushnell doesnt ever compromise with the quality of glass on this device.

Other alternatives in the XLT series

Since the number of devices in the XLT series is enormous, it is essential to recount them and analyze its features. The most recommended piece of equipment is the 4-12*40 with the DOA, which also has the highest internet hits. It is more attractive because of its affordability and its high octane features. The versatility it offers with its zooming regulations is second to none, particularly suitable for spacious environments. It is priced at around 180$ and is categorized as one of the most authentic scopes for parallax correction.

Features of the Bushnell Banner

  • 3x zoom for regulating zoom in all kinds of environment
  • Multi-coated lens for crisp and clear image formation
  • Has an eye-relief of five centimeters for a safe recoil motion
  • Has an enhanced 91% transmission of light
  • Instant-focus that allows you to sight immediately after target acquisition.

Other Alternatives to choose from

The Nikon Buckmasters II, 4-12x40mm, BDC, Riflescope can enable you to capture high-resolution images even under low lighting environment. The hunter will be able to magnify more rapidly than other devices. The magnification range furthers hunting in dense forest canopies and even in temperate prairies because of its free-flowing nature. However, the side effect of this is, that it comes with recoil velocity, which can be a bit nerve-racking for novices.

The Bushnell Engage Riflescope, Matte Black, 1 and Bushnell Trophy Rifle Scope with DOA 600 Reticle are eminent in the market for its unparalleled tracking ability and offers a great sighting, and the bullets slide out without any hesitation. The Vortex Optics Crossfire II Second Focal Plane, 1-inch Tube Riflescopes, has a soft spot for people, who are just setting out in the domain of civilian game hunting as this has a parallax correction manipulation, unlike any other riflescope in the market. You can shift between differentiated bars of brightness with this device. The power support in this device is as amazing as it gets, even at the nom-economic levels of brightness.

Bushnell Banner Dusk & Dawn Multi-X Reticle Adjustable Objective Riflescope comes equipped with a dusk and dawn brightness layer which creates an efficient sight by accentuating the crispness and clarity. There are different reticles available with this device. And for approximately 100$, you will get a great bargain. And this relatively cheaper scope, than the Simmons Truplex .22 Mag Riflescope.

The Vortex Optics Diamondback Second Focal Plane Riflescopes have less than optimum dispersion glass. Which furthers the formation of the image and the fully covered lens enables a very high color fidelity. The Simmons 560520 Truplex Riflescope has an eye relief of approximately 3-4 inches which is a standard size and is an underrated device. The Bushnell Trophy Rifle Scope with Multi-X Reticle is best tossed up in circles for the most efficient transmission of light.

Monstrum 3-12x42 AO Rifle Scope with Illuminated Mil-Dot Reticle and Offset Reversible has up to 12 times of magnification range and has a reticle lighting up to 5 different levels. The Mil-dot enables you to estimate the impact point and also compensate for bullet deviations. The body has nitrogen in it so that it is waterproof. Leupold VX-Freedom 3-9x40mm Rifle Scope has a custom dial service so that they can go forward and create a scope based on your ballistic demands. This device also comes with a matte black layering on top of it. The shape of it enables hunters to different kind of rings. This scope is also known for zeroing in quicker than most other devices in this price region.

The primary function of a riflescope is to zoom in and enhance the magnitude of your prey and furthers formation of a more precise picture than our normal vision can capture. The indicator of a decent scope is not just accurate shooting but also shooting from fairly vast distances that would have otherwise seemed reasonably robust. A friendly and quality built scope will also enable to visualize the domain of shooting, in a better light. And advocates safety, so that your hunting stays limited to the object and doesnt get scattered in different directions.
